Dorris M. Closs

Dr. Dorris M. Closs, ’54, ’61, was an associate dean at Buffalo State College and president of the Erie County Cooperative Extension Service Association at the time of her death March 23, 1983. She is remembered as a dedicated teacher and a warm humane person, sensitive to the needs of others and always thoughtful and helpful.

Following her graduation from East Aurora High School, Dr. Closs completed both her bachelor and Master of Science in education degrees at Buffalo State in Home Economics. She received her doctorate and administrative certification from University at Buffalo.

During her teaching career, she taught in high schools and served with the New York State and Massachusetts Education Departments. She returned to Buffalo State as a professor of home economics in 1967. At the time of her death, she was serving as an associate dean and was president of the Cooperative Extension Service of Erie County.

Professionally, she served in various national, state and local officer positions in the New York State Home Economics Teacher Association, New York State Home Economics Association, Home Economics Education Association, and Phi Upsilon Omicron, the home economics honor society.

The Dorris M. Closs Scholarship was established in memory of Ms. Closs following her death in 1983.
